I am an adoptee and I was born in the mid 1970s. The story that has been told to me was that my mother was from the state of New York, but she gave birth to me in southern Illinois. Originally I was promised to a white couple for adoption, but once I was born they declined the adoption because of my ethnic features. I was reclassified as a bi-racial African American baby and placed into the adoption system. Very soon after I was adopted by an African American couple who raised me in central Illinois and I believed I was a bi-racial African American until last year. In doing research surrounding my adoption I discovered the “facts” surrounding my adoption were actually assumptions. After performing a DNA test for ancestry (as many African Americans are beginning to do such as Oprah) I have discovered I have absolutely no Sub-Saharan ancestry. Most of my ancestry and ethnicity is actually Mediterranean Italian mixed with Norwegian with a very small chunk of North African Berber blood from Tunisia which is not surprising since Tunisia is only 95 miles away from Sicily. According to the definition of “white” given by the U.S. Census it includes people who originate from Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
It has taken me months of research about genetics, the history of the Mediterranean and the Italian American experience to make sense of all this. Although my genetics fit into the U.S. definition of "white" my phenotype and cultural up bringing does not fit the social definition of what is "white". Hello, I am a “white” Italian American who at birth was not awarded and continue to not be awarded white privilege at least in mid-west America. Nice to meet you.

Aw, that sucks. Sounds like you're pretty well-prepared, at least.

Also, that's very interesting about smoking as a coping strategy. I have used exercise in some of those ways: running is particularly good for helping the thoughts come.

I don't read Pam's House either, but I appreciate you posting about this controversy. Are people actually banned from using the term "cis" on that site? That's appalling.

I never understood why some people find "cis" so offensive; all it means is "not trans."

I liked Lisa Harney's explanation: that "cis," as the complement of "trans," implies equivalency and parity, which is jarring to cissexists.

(It's really weird to see that reaction to "cis" crop up on a gay-rights blog, though!)
